Hi, this is my first post on this site and unfortunately it's not a happy one, recently driving one night the car developed a bad rattling noise at anywhere above tickover with a bit of a rough idle (booming noise) my dad's a mechaninc so i pulled it off the road and we had a look and listen, we diagnosed the fault as the dual mass flywheel/clutch as the car was starting to shudder really bad when accelerating (as if the clutch was slipping) we put this down to the fact that I'd had the car chipped and the extra torque had killed the flywheel.
Well last weekend I took out the box replaced the DMF and clutch put it all back together again and ............................ it was still making the same noise We then decided to take the rocker cover off and see what we could see further to removing the inlet pipes and hearing a banging inlet noise.............. So luckily I decided to do a bit of research on this site and found out that in addition to the DMF being a rather common falut another one is the camshafts and buckets, anyway took the rocker off last night and almost despaired as initially we couldn't see anything wrong................. and then we seen a badly scored and worn bucket at no.4 cylinder................ hopefully this is the cause of all my stress and loss of money recently.

Now that the long winded story is out of the way, I was going to ask how may people this has happened to because as far as I am aware the car has been taken care of with the appropriate oil by myself and it was owned by a Volkswagen technician before that.
Also does anyone know whether you can get a camshaft kit for the golf, as I said its a GT TDI 150 engine code ARL - depending on how expensive it is I may replace everything after hearing more stories about worn lobes etc.

Same thing happened to me. 33000 miles, full service history (bought second hand). Idle was lumpy and above 1000rpm there was a distinct rattle. One camshaft lobe was completely worn away and the bucket scored. When I bought the car (from a non-VW dealer garage) they serviced it. I reckon they didn't use the correct PD oil thus causing this excessive wear. So, new camshaft and buckets, plus timing belt and water pump while it was stripped. I bought the car as I thought the VW diesels were bullet proof (they may be if the correct oil is used).
