    hi all

returned back to the audi camp last week after a few years away (in the volvo camp) with an audi 80 2.8 e quattro.

i have noticed that there is a noise at a certain point on the steering travel.

i have never seen power steering before with a ram attached on it and the noise sounds like the rod is bent slightly and it is rubbing the seal on its way back into the body of the ram?? maybe the seal is just worn?
there also seems to have been a leak or it is still leaking as there looks like power steering fluid and muck all over the inner wing on the nearside around the underneath of the ram body? fluid level is low too!

question is can this ram be renewed on its own or is it part of the rack?

the end near the middle of the cars look about my level of expertise being one nut bolt but i cant quite work out how to detach the ram body on the far nearside??? not a lot of access in there !

    cheers in advance

    andy

    Hi.
Have you solved this problem? I have exactly the same kind of noise at a point on steering left...like a groan. Suggestions?

hi to anyone who reads this thread and has the same problem!

i never did get round to fixing the problem as now it come and goes much like the weather! i settled on a conclusion that it was a worn seal on the ram which audi told me was a sort of self centering mechanism to assist winding off the steering. normally only fitted to the v6s i think due to the weight of the heavy engine digging the tyres in to the road?
the price they quoted me for a replacement ram i seem to remember was about £75 maybe plus vat which i thought was fairly reasonable considering the usually high prices!
i have decided i wont replace the ram until it packs up all together as i doesnt affect the driving in any way!

if you really cant live with it then i would recommend replacing it! should cure it but i cant guarantee it!

    hope this helps!

p.s i suppose a spray of wd40 on the shiny part of the ram may silence it a bit or even completely and would also give a definate answer!

    andy

p.s let me know how you get on in case i ever do decide to do something!
