I'm sure this question has been asked many times before, but here goes.
My 1999 1.8T Estate has given me great pleasure over the time I have been running it, apart from one issue - the lights. They are terrible.
I replaced both headlamp units with Hella assemblies, and have fitted Halfords Xenon bulbs to the main beams, but the dis are, at best, adequate, and the mains still too diffuse to be really effective.
Is there any solution to this problem.

The new headlight units and Halfords bulbs gave only a small improvement.
I think the main problem is that the main beams are too diffuse, almost as if the filament is not at the focus of the reflector.
I have noticed on a couple of specialist bulb sites, that the bulb specified for the Passat can be either 'Standard H1 or Upgrafe H7' . I have some spare H1 bulbs, but they don't appear to sit properly in the bulb holder.
Another post claims that the Osram 'Night Breaker' (claimed 90% more light) is good, so I might try that.

Osram Nightbreakers get good reviews on other forums so it might be worth trying them or....

Upgrading the whole thing with a HID kit

    Thanks Baron
    I probably will trythem.
HID kits are illegal unless the headlamp units fitted to the car were designed for them, and also have self-levelling and headlamp washers. In any case, they are no good for main beams, which is where I have the problem.

    Fair do's about your lights

I appreciate that the HID Kits are illegal - however.... I haven't read of anyone being fined or told to remove them.
