My 2000 2.5 V6 TDI Passat has just died.. was doing 60-70 and went to change gear and the engine cut out, tried to restart and its just cranking over and over. Did have a message on the display and the glow plug light on when i was coasting something about management but didnt get the whole message, wasnt on for long.

The recovery guy reckons it might be the crank sensor.

The cambelt should have loads of miles and time left before it goes.

Id like to sort this myself or at least be sure of what the problem is before i take it anywhere, so can anyone give me an idea of what to check for?

Theres fuel in the filter and it turns over fine (it could be my paranoia but maybe cranking a little fast)

Please help i just changed a CV joint to fix one problem yesterday, this is the last thing i need!

if you can undo some of the top casing bolts you may be able to gently pull the casing apart just enough to see and feel the belt. if it has gone you should be able to tell. failing that see if you can get the fault codes read.

or you could also try cracking a injector to see if there diesel pumping through

just had a think and this is what actually happened:

doing 60 in 4th, full throttle and thought i hit the rev limiter (thats what it felt like maybe a bit harsher than that) so changed to 5th, that was when i noticed the engine wasnt running so no idea yet, will check injectors for fuel and belt etc when i can.

coming to you live now from.... outside my house.

Got a bunch of covers off and can see that the cambelt, injector pump belt and aux belt all look fine, can see diesel in a clear pipe that was covered before, just taken the battery off in a futile attempt to reset whatever is running the thing but im out of ideas really, going to crack off an injector and see if its fueling in a bit

Right its been to a garage and they have diagnosed it as the injector pump, i called Patterson diesel after they came up on a search here and they reckon its easy to remove, so anyone on here done it?

Think i'll remove and refit myself, then take/send it somewhere to be reconned
