does anyone know how to unscrew the cranksaft pulley bolt in the centre, i think it is a cheese head bolt and i was wondering if it had a reverse thread, as i have done what haynes manual tells me to by selecting 5 gear and having an assistant applying the brakes and then with a breaker bar attempted to undo the bolt but it does not move. any ideas???

I'm trying to change the cam belt.

on a mk3 u just undo the 4 allen key bolts and the bottom pulley will come off, no need to undo the big crank bolt, however if you do, u can use a large flat screw driver and hold it in the flywheel teeth through the inspection hole it the top of the gearbox.

hi, i undid the 4 allan bolts and only the outer polley for the v belt that powers the power steering came off, will the ribbed polley come off as well without undoing the large centre bolt? if does it need some force to get it off? thanks

DO NOT remove the 12 point centre bolt, if you do you MUST replace it and tightening it up is not easy without the VW crank locking tool.
