  1. Symptoms of faulty MAF?

I have two small issues at the mo on my '98 1.8T. I get quite an abrupt, jerky response when I come off the throttle sometimes. At first I thought this might be slack in the drivetrain but then the car's only done 74k.

Also, my mpg is disappointing - I commute 25 miles to work each day and about 23 miles is motorway. Even if I cruise at 55 constantly I never get more than 300 miles from a tank. The computer never reads more than 32 mpg (average) for the trip.

Could this be a faulty MAF?
