My fifth gear has disappeared behaves a s neutral. disapeared during 1 trip and few gear changes. No noise.

Do I need a new gearbox or is there a simpler repair

Or should i just live with 4 gears

can i expect other gears to fail

Hi I would imagine your fault is with the gear selector mechanism,if there had been anything major wrong with 5th gear you would have heard it

I have a 1.6LXi, and fifth gear went on that. Do you know what engine is in your car? If its the AEE, then your more than likely going to have the DVB gearbox.

And these are notorious for going at early mileages. Mine went while driving on the M6, was in fifth and it just felt like it popped out of gear, and as you say when selecting fifth it just acts as neutral.

On my car the fifth gear completely shattered in the gearbox, causing a clunking/metallic rattling noise when driving. But you say there is no noise?

Best thing to do is open your bonnet, and get someone to sit in the car selecting gears, to eliminate the selector (which is unlikely with it just affecting fifth).

Other than that, your better off going to a gearbox specialist for advice and try and refrain from using the car! Get it towed to them! As if your gear has shattered like mine did driving it about in that state could cause the whole gearbox to seize!

    Cheers

    Craig
