    Hi,

I have a yr 2000 3dr 2.0 GTi. The high level brake light only lights up if I hit the brakes...

However, on some MK IV's, I see that when the side lights are on, the two end of high level brake light come on dimly.

My question is, how do I get that? The more lights the better in my opinion - I changed my rear side lights from the std 5w ones to 10w ones, so it shows up more bright and would love to get the high level brake light to show side lights too....

    Any thoughts??

To the best of my knowledge (and I'm happy to be proved wrong here), the high level brake light should only ever come on when you're braking, not when the side lights are switched on.

no honest - some golf iv's do - the right and left end of the high level brake light comes on with side lights (or at least is on all the time if not tied to the side lights)... i've seen it more than enough times to realise that it's not a one off either - not seen it on an older mk iv than mine - all that i've seen are more recent than my w-plated gti - say 52 plate etc...

    it's true - honest guv - it's not just me hallucinating ;-)

Fair enough, can't say I've ever seen it myself or know where you would even start if you wanted to make your car do that but good luck anyway, I'll be interested to see what becomes of this thread.

This is exactly my problem too.
other issues that I am trying to find solutions for.
Our 1.6se auto with cruise control, has been cutting out when driving at the same time
'engine workshop' comes up and the 'epc' warning lamp comes on.
cruise control can still be switched on
haveing been through the forum I had assumed it was the brake light switch, today I fitted a new green one, I think I did the job as carefully as can be and it seemed to fit easily with a simple twist.

now though, my low level brake lamps do not work at all and the high level lamp is dimmed on the outer blocks all the time and the centre section lights up when the pedal is pressed.

    Any one have any ideas?

I am nervous of letting the local VW lot have the car as they want £90 just to have a look.

    Edit,
I looked through the forums a bit more and got the answer.
It was both bulbs, simple as that, imagine how much that might have cost to trace!
