    Dear all,

after changing the car battery on my 1993 MK 3 Golf 1.8, the car has been left immobilised, and I don't know how to override this. I bought the car second-hand, so I don't know if it's a factory-fitted alarm or not and what came with it. What definitely didn't come with the car when I bought it was a remote control for the alarm.

This is where I'm stuck. Is there a way to reset the alarm without a remote control?

I read somewhere one could turn the ignition key and then disconnect and reconnect the negative pole of the car battery. Has anyone tried this? I'm a bit scared of fiddling with the battery while the ignition is on...

Any other ways of resetting the alarm?
    Many TIA for your help!

If there is a factory unit, the alarm should stop when unlocking the door with the key...

I would try that thing with the battery, you are perfectly safe (in retrospect) when tampering purely with the negative, maybe a couple of minuscule sparkles..
    Try it

    Thanks, Powers160 and Adamss24.

I had a garage fix the problem in the end but will refer to your advice if the problem occurs again.
