In the past I have blanked off the EGR valve on my car, thinking that I will get a cleaner fuel burn, improved mpg and possibly a little more power. However a VW specialist told me that disconnecting the valve is not desiarable as exhaust gas temperatures get raised too high, and the TDI engine also uses the EGR as a kind of dump valve.

Does anyone have any accurate info on this? Is the specialist correct? Does disconnecting the valve make any difference anyway?

Should give you a few more horses doing this. As far as I'm aware everyone that has done this has never had issues.

    OK, thanks.

So, just to make sure I'm doing it right....

All I have to do is disconnect the rubber pipe and block it up, and block up the inlet on the valve where the pipe was?

This ensures that the valve stays closed all the time?

I'm planning on cleaning my EGR this weekend, never done it before.
Now that you've mentioned it... I may also do the same... but I need to know... what are the implications of disconnecting the EGR valve?

    Pros/Cons?
Having a EGR obviously serves a purpose.

Also, how do you intend to block it up... can't just bung it up with 'something' can i?

Previously I have blocked the rubber pipe up with a screw and used tape to cover the inlet on the valve.

To be honest, I have never noticed any difference when driving when the EGR has been disconnected, although the car must be breathing only cleaner air. Just not sure what the long-term effects might be?!

You can just put a grub screw or ball bearing in the pipe and then reconnect it.
