Hello, I do a lot of motorway driving on unlit motorway and although I can see well, When people overtake me with HID's I can see more of the road from there lights.

    I've seen some on http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/hid-products.html

There near the bottom designed for Passat aswell as a few others, it's only £99 but is that too cheap? Will these be road legal? Is 6k the best one to go for?

None of the aftermarket kits are legal; you need proper units, washers, auto-levelling to comply with the law.

The 4300K will give more light, and is the colour temperature of OE installations. 6000K is whiter, very white. Higher than 6000k are bluey purple and give less light. It sounds fine value for less than two tanks of fuel.

i spoke to Martin at HID direct today...very helpful, the kits sound good, he recommended 8000k for my b5.5 passat, and said that the head lamp leveling system would work as normal....no kits in stock at present though....

Are you sure you want 8000K, it looks really coloured and gives about half the light of 4300K. Usually they are just used by Chavs.

4300K is what cars with HID come with from the factory.
6000K looks even whiter, like a camera flash
    8000K looks bluey purple

There is a chart above, the 8000k I saw on a subaru looked more like the 10000K on that chart, look at the colour of the hand, that is how everything looked that the light shone on. Of course there may be variations/tolerance between makes of HID and the camera may not be 100% colour balanced.

If I look at that chart, and think what an average HID looks like on a car on the street, I would say 8000K. Yet 95% of them will actually be 4300k, yet the 4300k on the chart looks like a plain halogen, so you could say the chart is two stages lower in colour temp than reality.

I have 6000K and definitely wouldn't go any higher.
