    I've looked at the recommended tyre pressure on the inside of the petrol cap, but it's in metric, and all of the garages I use have imperial measurements on the tyre inflators, ie. lbs square inch. Can anyone give us a rough idea as to what I should have the tyres at ?
    My car is a 1.8 Passat T reg petrol.
    I've always had pressure on my tyres on other cars I've had, of a similar size, at about 30/32 lbs per square inch.
    Whenever I go to get some fresh tyres for the cars I've had, of similar size, the tyre place always pump them up to 30 lbs/ inch.
    Thanks.

    I`d always check your tyre pressures yourself, as I recently had a set of tyres fitted by a "professional" national outfit, who underinflated all of them by 6 PSI. This was despite the correct pressures being on the inside of the filler flap.

    When I went back and questioned them, the "fitters" (can`t think of anything more descriptive which I could put in print) merely told their boss that "thats what we always put in tyres of that size"

    Well, thats alright then.....

    A quick conversion from bar to psi :-

    1bar = 15psi

    As most pressure gauge are not that accurate, its more important to get the same reading on the tyres across the axles ie. the front tyres are the same pressures according to your pressure gauge and the same goes for the rear tyres.
    Another factor is the air temperature - cold weather and the tyre pressure will be lower, hotter weather and the tyre pressure goes up. So if you take a pressure reading first thing in the morning it will be lower than a pressure reading in the afternoon after a long run.

    Cheers for that info Hex.

    The recommended pressures on the filler cap make a bit more sense now. It says between 2.0 to 2.2 depending on load in car.
    So, I wasn't that far off by guessing about 30 psi.
