My '94 Golf has had a heavy clutch now for about 2 years. The pedal seems to creak and generally makes for a noisy gear change and fierce biting point. I have got used to it over time but it's beggining to annoy me now! Could this be the cable or is it the pedal? How much would I be looking at for a new pedal assembly?

Would it be simply be a replacement clutch or would I need to replace the cable aswell?

We decide that after we have changed the clutch.

Wise words. I think it's still on it's original clutch (156K) so it's probably due to be replaced. I'm confused though, if the clutch was heavy wouldn't it be more of the cable/pedal rather than the actual clutch itself? After all, the clutch is stationary which is being moved by the pedal/cable?

The pressure plate goes heavy; they have been doing this since they came out in 1974 on the Scirocco 1.5 when the 020 box was first used. You could try changing the cable first. When we change the cable we like to use what VW call the "driving school" cable which is manually adjustable rather than the auto adjust cable.

Ah I see. Thanks for the helpful info'! I think I might enquire about a new clutch and cable.
