    hi ya,

I'm seriously considering getting an A6 2.5 TDI quattro on a 99 plate [ 6 speed manual] . It has a reasonable service history, etc and looks like a good car.

Is there any thing I should pay particualar attention to when buying ..? I was scared to death when a friend told me a fuel pump for this thing is £2.5k !!!!! [ is that right ..???!?!? ]

I've also noticed on the site here the cam shaft wear is something to look out for.

any general advice I'd be greatful for

    thanks very much !

    Matt

Ensure ALL the electrical stuff works. Pre facelift A6s (up to 2001) often suffer with Plenum Chamber faults, with water ingress into the electrics in the passenger footwell. If you buy, make sure the drain holes for this Plenum Chamber are clear, they are located beneath the battery.

There can always be a risk buying a 8/9 year old car, I bought mine two years ago and so far everything has all been good, outside of normal tyres, brakes and servicing the only extra bits I have had to replace was the airbag ecu (warning light was on when I bought the car, luckily managed to get a second hand one from 4 ring spares which was a quarter of the price that Audi wanted). Other than that it would be a lot of the normal checks that you would complete on any car.

It's now on 134k miles, and seems to be going strong, the best car I've ever had (though uprate the headlamps, either by changing the bulbs or a HID kit)

    thanks for the information.

I'm hearing lots of horror stories with the engines, bad fuel ecom, camshafts, silly money for bits ... any of this true ? I know that audi's arn't cheap to maintain, and it also depends greatly on the individual car I buy.

Just remember that for every horror story you hear there will be 99 other satisfied owners from whom you might only hear from two or three of them.

Like every car there will always be weak points but talking to a friend of mine who works in the trade (Audi garage) he always recommends them, I almost sold mine about 12 months ago, spent a while looking at other cars and in the end decided not to sell because the only car I could think to buy was another A6 !

yes, they cost a fortune to run and maintain........if you go to the *******.

Find a local specialist and protect your wallet.

only thing i would say is check for fluid leaks, as they are expensive, not in parts, just in labour getting the seals replaced. (especially the ones inbetween the engine & the gearbox)
+ when servicing the car, take it to a specialist, the fuel pump thing I have heard about, as the garages serving the cars were not doing the process proerly & breaking them.. and obvioulsy dont put petrol in it & it should be fine :-)
The rest of the car is pretty bomb proof, although if your thinking about 45+MPG thats not going to happen. circa 35 is more lke it.
I have a 2.5 TDI Quattro 6 spd manual & its great, the V6 had a superb note reving & it feels meatier than the 1.9. and it never feels stretched.

    Cummon the V6 TDI's
