There are loads of oils that are compatable, even some non branded ones, turn the oil can over and look on the label at the back down the bottom, if it is compatable it should say vw 505 01. As far as turning your service light off, your manual should tell you, mine does, if not browse the forum.

Long life, You don't need to change it as often as 505.01.

Not sure, but I change mine every 7500miles.

I missed a one from the begining of that.

i just read a post saying 507 longlife is good for 18,500 miles , 505 is ok for 10,000 , this oil isnt cheap at all . if you are changing it at 7,500 miles , keep it for me the next time you change it and i'll get the other 11,000 miles out of it.

vw 507 00, vw 506 01 is long life oil.

This normally put in at the manufacture stage on all vw,Seat,Skoda etc.
From dealer experience it is better to use vw505 01 (normal service) oil.

Heres why,

If you use long life 507 00, 506 01 on tdi engines without a diesel particulate filter (none have them except 170 bhp, i remember) it requires you to drive harder-revving hard, the reason is that the additives to protect the engine cam, piston rings are better activated (simple non technical term). So if your a rep or thrash your car is better but 18000 is ia max i would consider as safe. I regularly see 25-30000 vw cars servicing lights activating an oil service -with that much mileage that oil is low on protection...dispite what your cars servicing computer says.

IF you drive between 10-12 thousand a year --in the long run it is better for the engine to have the oil changed more frequently.

Remember VW make more money from long life servicing...and they also have more oil wear related issues from it--fact!!

I changed my LL servicing to normal servicing and have used vw 505 01 oil at official VW servicing and equivalent 505 01 (cheaper castrol etc same effectiveness) oils on 'top ups' and 'mid term oil changes-5-6000'

My VW's (5) have never used oil and have always lasted 100+ miles
