My 1.9 TDI is now over seven years old and still on its original battery, has anyone any experience of how much more life I can expect out of it?

The dash volt meter reads 13v most of the time, and it starts OK, but ………….

All I can say is I had a battery around this age in a Vito which was working fine, then one sunny morning driving to work it exploded unexpectedly ... it actually still started the car still but was in lots pieces. See picture of remains .. 8-)

Why it happens can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery..._other_hazards

Two checks you should make are the fluid levels in each cell (if the battery is non-sealed) and if possible the battery acid condition.

If they are both OK, then in theory the battery should be fine but keep an eye on it.

I just got an 8 year old Sharan with what looked like the original battery, so I took the liberty of changing as I don't want it going up again !

    Thanks for that comforting info!

A collegue got to 10 years with a landrover battery, then changed it as a precaution. I'm tempted to do the same for the reasons you outlined, however they're not cheap are they................
