THe problem with my golf is tht the battery light comes on and satys on even when i have turned the car over. i have taken the alterntor off and checked the points and these appear to be fine. The car had been off the road for around a year and i did have't to change the battery, any thoughts would be great.

As in previous post, you may just need to give the car a good run and see how it goes. The alternator light being on could mean either that the battery is knackered or the alternator is not working correctly.

On my missus Golf Mk3, the battery light came on, fairly faintly though. When checked the output with a voltmeter, the alternator was pumping out quite a high voltage - think it was the voltage regulator. Simple cheap part, but the problem came when I tried to remove the earth lead - the bolt's thread sheared inside the alternator. Bit of a bummer, so had to get an exchange and fitted new one. Perfect after that.
