I'm wondering if I should change the front pads myself or to give it to Audi to do.

I had a quick look and the front pads are about £35+VAT.

I'll have to get a proper jack and those stand things in case the jack moves/fails etc

Has anyone done them on a new shape A3 or maybe MK5 Golf as I'm sure hey will be the same.

Tools, Time, pros, cons, other costs etc?

    Cheers

Thats a bit of a tricky one really, getting a jack, stands and the tools if you've not got them would probably be more than having some fitted tho saying that you've then got them for the future. If you're going to buy some I'd suggest machine mart

You shouldn't need anything more than a decent half inch drive socket set and probably a flat screw driver to actually do the job (tho i've never worked on either of the cars in question) cars are mostly the same

Time, you're probably looking at 45-60 minutes for your first side then half that for the 2nd when you know what you're doing

ATS would probably fit them for £50 all in tho i'd bet

Its a fairly simple job tho normally:

Loosen your wheelnuts while its on the floor, put the car on its stands, wheels off, put you steering over one way (ie right if your working on the offside) so you can get to the caliper bolts, undo them and withdraw your caliper, might be an abs sensor wire you need to remove too, withdraw then there'll be some form of spring clip holding the pads in themselves, then work backwards

What sort of condition your disc's in? As they are easy to change whilst the calipers are off
You may think I'm being helpful yet sarcastic, this is only because I feel I need to help you to help yourself in the future

Thanks for the advice. I need to pop out in't cold to look at the disks, I think they are ok though.

I used to do them on my first and second cars, but they were very very basic. (MG Metro and Nova SR) - Yes the MG and SR is necessary

They won't be vastly different from what you've changed before, I think rears are different as you need a wind back tool if they have rear calipers tho I've never had my fingers on one, the rear calipers on my RR are exactly the same as the fronts (tho i usually have to use a 4ft bar to get the bolts out)

I think they are the same as the passat, which are the same as mine.

I used this guide and did all my pads and discs. It was my first ever attempt to.
