diesel pump remove and refitting

Hey Everyone.

As can be seen on another thread , i am having problems with my sons caddy. It is a 1.6 diesel non turbo , on a 1989 year. The thing will start but dies a couple of secs later. I have spoke to a diesel pump reconditioner , and he has advised that it sounds like the pump is gunked up ( car previously run on veggy oil , and then stood for 6 months or so )
I have cleaned all pipes out , ran it from a canof diesel in engine comp ( to elliminate sucking air etc)
I need to take the pump off , so i can get it to him , but have no idea how. I can remove bolts and nuts until it falls off , but i know there is more to it than that LOL.
Should i mark everything with paint dots , and make sure nothing moves , or doi need specialist tools to remove it , set it up again , re time it etc etc????
Any adivise would be much appreciated

The engine should be set up at TDC and the pump removed. The problem comes when putting it back together. The cam must be locked up with a plate in the tail (with the cam cover off), the crank set to 0 using the flywheel mark and pointer inside the gearbox (viewed through the opening after removing the 27-mm hex key green plastic bung) and then the pump locked into position using a locking pin. Then the cam pulley is released by undoing the bolt whilst holding the cam pulley (do not use the locking plate to hold the cam, you WILL shear off on of the sides of the slot in the tail of the cam) and then the pulley tapped from behind to break it free of the taper and is then free to rotate. You fit a new timing belt and tensioner and set the tension. When it is all tensioned up and aligned, nip up the cam pulley bolt and then remove the locking plate and locking pin before fully tightening up the cam bolt using a counter hold tool in the pulley. After this the engine can be carefully rotated and then started up if all is well. The pump will need to be timed up using either a timing light with diesel pipe trigger adapter or with a dial gauge thorough the back of the pump. Any diesel specialist will be able to do this for you.
