    Please can someone help?

My Audi A4 1.8T 2001 has started to show a problem which appears to have been discussed by various people on the forum. But it doesn't seem clear to me whether the problem is a temp sensor behind the engine, temp sensor under the rad and/or the water pump.

When I bought my car last winter I noticed the engine cooling fans came on for about 5 mins when the car was started, regardless of the engine temp. I took it to a local mechanic who found an error on his diagnostics which appeared to be a temp sensor behind the engine. I subsequently got this replaced but it didn't resolve the problem. I left the problem as it were and the problem disappeared during Spring and Summer. Then this winter the problem has reappeared.

Reading the forum its obvious others have been having similar problems but it doesn't appear clear if anyone has resolved their problems and exactly what they did to resolve it.

The problem....The cooling fans come on, the engine temp gauge hardly goes up to 90oC (only if the CC heater is off). The CC Heater takes ages to blow warm/hot air. The engine management light is continually on.

I'm dead against taking it to the dealers through past experience.

    Can anyone please help?

Hi The fact that the engine management light is on continually is telling you there is something wrong, and you will have to get a diagnose read out to find out the problem. There seems to be two problems here,i dont know if they are related. One being the engine thermostat,if the engine temp does not reach 90degrees,but i dont think that problem would activate the management light.

These are the error messages as of last month when I had a full service done...

    Error code 17704 - (P1296)
16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor Low
17947 - Clutch Pedal Switch, No pulsable signal
17511 - OZ Heater circuit. Capacity too low

...the mechanic cleared the errors but said to return the car to him after a few weeks to re-read the faults.

Last year I had the error message 17704 only but the problem was the same so I doubt the other error messages are contributing to the problem!

Hi again as the mechanic said you will have to re-read the fault codes.Error code p1296 suggests a fault with AC centre vent temp sensor G191,but there again this would not activate the management light, but should show up on AC display,if you have Climatronic? How ever a faulty clutch pedal switch can cause various problems.Tell me do the radiator fans go continually even when the AC is switched off?

I have climate control but the engine fans come on regardless of the AC on or off.
