Remote Key fob 98 golf

Hi,
I went to local vw dealer today to get price on remote key fob....he priced it at 36 + vat. and then went on to say that it costs extra to get it reprogrammed...maybe 80 in total.

however a mechanic for the dealer happened to be in parts at the same time so he ran it by him. he says the reprogramming of the new remote fob would only take 2 secs along with a second car key.


the problem is i only have one key. I see ebay (and other places) have the remote fob along with reprogramming BUT it appears i also need a second key.

can anyone advice on a way forward ? all i need is a working remote key fob/

what distance from your car does your remote key fob generally work from ?
