how do I fix the following that must affect all cars not just my 05 Passat

wipers drive OK in both directions but 75% of the time the blades don't wipe in one direction they judder/skip across the glass. It's as if the rubber blade is scraping rather than wiping the glass

Assuming you have not replaced the wipers then do.

I bought a new pair from Halfords about 3-5 months ago. Right from day one the drivers side wiped perfectly going clockwise, however going anti-clockwise it left a small area out!!!

Should of taken it back I suppose. My car has been in VW today for something unrelated. They changed it for me!!
    One German, Two Italian.
    It's a Mercedes Benzzzz though

Just a little tip to save you £50......put a small piece of carpet or cloth on the windscreen where the arm will return to, I did'nt, the arm slipped from my fingers,,,,,,,,,, and cracked the blooming windscreen.
The insurance paid for it but obviously we had to pay the excess.
The insurance co told me it was one of the most common things to happen to windscreens.

Wow, the springs in your wiper arms must have been changed for valve springs!

I reckon my springs are nowhere strong enough to wreck the screen.
