    surely this cant be right!!!

had a look through old posts & seems others are getting horrendous oil consumption too......

i just passed the 6000mile mark & have low oil lamp on the dash.
a colleague who collected his on the same day also has oil light lit at 5,500.

the day i collected it, i was followed home by a strange woman (my wife!) & she commented on it being like following **** dastardly with his smog-maker on.
    ridiculous.

i'd be interested to see how this car will fare on hydrocarbon emissions at it's 1st test, cos imo there's no way it'll pass.

i'm really tempted to ignore the oil light & let it seize up & die so i can swap it for a skoda.

i hate the push button park brake, i hate the pushbutton start, i hate the light flywheel & constant stalls in traffic = very embarrasing for a pro driver with over 25yrs behind the wheel.

while this is a comfy motorway car & very spacious i can honestly say it's the most quirky (annoying) vehicle i have ever owned & will be glad to see the back of it.

It is normal during the period where the piston rings bed in.

TIP: Thrash it, you will get a tighter / better engine and the smoke and oil loss issue will soon disappear.

I find a nice springy piece of larch does it better.

Seriously, go to the tdi club forums and do a search on "breaking in".

    i'll have a look thanks.
flogging a dead horse though really as i've already fallen out with the car.

my other ride is a vvc mg that redlines at 7.2 & i drive the passat the same tbh.
i was hoping to break it, but if you reckon caning it improves the engine then id better slow down!

Since the sump holds less than a gallon, on a new engine it's not surprising you're getting low oil at 6000 miles. I wouldn't call that horrendous. Mine used about a litre in its first 10,000 kms.

Constant stalling might mean you need a software upgrade. Mine used to, it doesn't now. I'm very happy with it.

I've got so used to the 'handbrake' I never think about it, it's excellent.

The push stop/start is less fiddly than using a key.

All the above is, of course, only my opinion....If the car lets me down, I might have to change my mind.

i think it's just the fact that ive driven conventional cars for so long & the passat (pardon me) seems very gimmicky in comparison.

    takes some getting used to.
re the park brake & hill starts, maybe it's pshycological but i find if i press the footbrake again before moving off it allows me to pull away without holding it on the clutch.

still too wierd for me though, like an auto but with a manual box :/

love the cruise control & lecky seats though - but you will find it hard to convert me!

It's taking me a while to get used to the handbrake again - there's no pattern to when it doesn't let go.....

It's difficult for me to say anything about the brake without tempting providence, but I've got to the point where I seldom think about it releasing.

I've practised on a slope and it's obvious that the only sure way is to press the clutch pedal through the carpet (slight exaggeration).

More and more car makers are using electronic handbrakes as an answer to the problem of handbrakes and rear discs. I suppose it all started when Citroen BXs with rear discs began rolling away, although I never had a problem with a Renault I had back in the late '60s which had rear discs.

So that's about a litre in 6,000 miles - sounds about right?

If it's like mine then it will start to use a bit less after 10,000 miles or so, as the engine has bedded in.

I think I'm getting about 10,000 miles per litre now.
