Hi all. Newcomer to this forum, Just bought a 2006 06 TDi estate 140. I got the car from a freind who was disposing of it from his company for the right price. My problem is the Manual 6 speed g/box noise. I think it is the first motion shaft bearing that is going, It is very groany as you set off & there in all gears but more noticable in 1st & 2nd due to speed noise etc. In neutral you can hear it & with clutch depressed it stops so almost sure it is the Front bearing that is U/S. Has anyone had this problem with the manual box. 34000miles. I have booked it in at VW to see if warranty covers this.

Sounds more like dual mass flywheel failure to me.

Definately DMF on there. But in my opinion possibly gearbox. Your logic is right that depressing the clutch isolates the gearbox, so if the noise stops, its likely gearbox. But hey - to check the gearbox, you gotta get to the flywheel, so they'll check both at VW unless theyre asleep......

Cheers for that, Just hope they change the gearbox instead of fitting new front bearing,, & maybe put a new clutch plate in. Bet they will want to charge for a clutch as a consumable.

Should be a warranty job anyway on an 06 - which prob means they wont change the clutch. Its common sense to change it as vibrations from the gearbox can wreak the clutch plate even if not immediately obvious, and tbh they may as well since theyve done all the work to get to it - but if under warranty i doubt they will. Preventitive measures under warranty - that'll be the day eh!

Well loks like crasher could have been right. Gulp eat humble pie. Took the car in yesterday 02/01/08 tech took on test drive, Came back & said yes i think the gearbox input shaft bearing is naf. Left car Rang me last night & said they had ordered new gearbox & flywheel assembly. Rang me this morning to say car was repaired. Been & picked it up. The repair sheet say remove & inspect gearbox... Replace flywheel & clutch assembly & replace origonal gearbox. Car is perfect now so seems crasher was right about the flywheel problems. Still got the whailing noise from back end but they have checked & as i thought the rear tyres are down to 3mm & ready for replacing. Bearings ok. The guy i bought it off did say when rear tyres are low around 16000 miles they get noisy.

Hope you don't mind a question from a non clutch knowing person, could I have a similar problem with a DSG? I thought the whining noise was simply the road noise from the tyres...

    Cheers.

Yes if you mean the whining from the back it is probably worn rear tyres. They tell me at VW that the tracking on the rear is a bit strange but unadjustable & when the rears get worn they get noisy.

Ooohhh thats a whole different kettle of fish bud. To test if its tyres or gearbox tho - depress the clutch, which takes the drive away from the gearbox.
TBH I dont have much experience with DSG apart from having seen a couple of presentations on how they work.... Although I work for the company that makes em OE, I havent come accross them in the aftermarket yet, and i'm 100% sure that any garage would siht themselves if you took it in with a clutch problem!
