Please could you help, has anyone got any help or advise on how to replace the thermostat on my golf, or would you recommend I just go and invest in a Haynes manual to see how this should be done.

Quite tricky on these engines, you might need to take the alternator off to get at it. I had to do this, but mines a diesel and the engine is a bit bulkier. I also had to pull the bumper/slam plate assembly off to make things easier. Took about 1.5 hours

The petrol engine in these is almost exactly the same as the 1.8 MK2 golf engine, and the thermostat is an easy job, but get a manual anyway coz if you are going to do work on your own car they are invaluable and it will pay for itself in this one job.
