It looks as though my A4 may have reached the end of it's useful life. Auto box has been causing problems the last couple of weeks and I had an auto specialist look at it yesterday

Has been difficult to pull away on cold morning starts lately and reluctant to change up until warmed up

After hooking it up to test rig the garage says the speed sensors are shot and it basically needs an overhaul to the tune of £1500 !

I'll more than likely get a 2nd opinion but it could be for the chop

If that's the case and anyone wants it to break / repair / whatever I'll be sending it on it's way quite soon

    1998 'S' A4 1.8 SE with approx 105,000 m
    Full leather & Sportline alloys

Is the car in good condition otherwise? If so, it may be worth repairing the box to extend its life by several more years. If you don't repair, you'll likely have to give the car away. As the body is galvanised, it ain't going to succumb to tin worm.

That sounds very suspicious to me. What were the codes?

Am speaking to the garage tomorrow for full details. They called me on Friday at the tail end of a 1 & 1/2 hour public transport journey to work and I wasn't in the right frame of mind for tech discussions.

Was thinking of replacing the car early next year and have no interest in spending close to the value of the car to keep it going really.

Bodywork is good, aside from those pesky rubber door trims - no biggie really - and it's a shame to see it crushed if that's it's destination.

I'll report back the findings but if there's is any interest for it I'll entertain anything really. Located in London SE22

Update: Feedback from the garage today was that the forward clutch is slipping which is throwing up the speed sensor fail readings. Reverse is fine (which is true) so recommends off with the gearbox to open it up. It could be just replacing the clutch but unknown until stripped.

I'm still not prepared to pay close to 4 figures on the hope that a big rebuild isn't required so a new home will probably be sought in the new year

No worries to hose that have had a speed sensor fail!! I recently puleed the engine and tip tranny from my wifes car and replaced every seal known to man. in the process i pulled the shaft out of the tranny to replace the ouput seals and BROKE my speed sensor ring!! Audi wanted to replace the whole shaft for $$$$ (Think it was about $500 usd).
I was not about to drop that kind of cash on a cheap magnent so i did some digging and found the company that makes the part for audi. $10!!

Well, I decided to replace the gearbox. Got it back yesterday, cost: £1700
Garage says to bring it back after 500 miles and they'll make any tuning adjustments if required. Seems I may have an airflow sensor issue causing idle to hunt a little which I had previously noted but not bothered with.

They are recommending a regular 6000 mile oil change which I thought was a bit too frequent, any thoughts on this?
