    hi there ive got a 1995 a4 1.8 20v, after a long run the other day (200miles)
the engine is making a weird sound.
upon closer inspection it seems the loud noise is coming from the front of my engine ie where the fan and cambelt is.
it sounds like someone has thrown a spanner in there but it seems to disapear after 2000 revs.
was just wondering if any1 can shed any light on the problem.

    thanks

Afraid i know not much about Audis having not owned mine for more than a month,,, but without hearing the sound, it coould be anything ,,

when was the cam belt done,,, as i was told to make sure when i bought mine it was done , as there is serious trouble when they go,,

if its an external noise could be a cam pulley on its way out ??? but thats a guess....

if your worried about taknig it to a Audi dealer you could try a VWAudi specialised i here than can be cheaper ,,,

    hope you get it sorted

theres an automatic tensioner on the fanbelt Thats prone to seizing, it could be this or the bearings in the alternator.

Does the noise alter with engine rev's or stay constant ?

Normally noises that disapear with higher rev's are oil pressure related. Does engine temp. also have an effect on the noise ?

Is the metallic knocking, or a wirring sound?

the sound dissapears after 2500rpm, the car seems to drive as normal no loss in any power.
the engine always seems to take a little while to heat up ive either gotta give it sum whellie or drive for about hlf hr just to get the temp inbetween 60/90.
the noise is more like a knocking than a whirring and it seems to be coming from the front of the engine if thats any help.

thanks for all the advice so far.....

if noise gets faster as revs increase till it goes, could be oil pressure related.

    When was oil changed ?

was it 10/40, as thinner grades will give oil pressure issues on older engines.

Put in a new filter and 10/40 semi synthetic and see what happens

the oil stays the same and then dissapears above 2500rpm.

i changed the oil and oil filter last monday b4 all the noises appeared, i also put some flushing stuff in b4 i changed the oil and let it run 4 20 mins.

surely if it was something to do with the oil pressure i would lose power but i havent the car drives as it did b4 just with a noise below 2500rpm

If you put in 0/30 rather than 10/40 then you could well have metallic noises at lower rev's. This is due to lower oil pressure.

Things like hydraulic tappets could produce the noises you describe.

Engine power would be uneffected, however the thinner oil can give less protection than the correct oil for the engine, and could cause failure of main bearings etc.

As the rev's increase the oil pressure will build and the noises would stop.

Do you still have the can ? if so check the grade.

It's easy to pick up the wrong grade, I did it once, and after a few day's my oil pressure light came on at tickover.
Realised mistake, put correct oil in and got away with it. If anything it acted like a good oil flush.
