    Hi All,
My air conditioning pump has been making a terrible screeching noise for a while. (I'm pretty sure it's the pump anyway; something connected to the aux. drive belt.)
I had a burst coolant tube and the belt area got sprayed. A few days later, the screeching started. I've replaced the belt so I don't think it's just the belt slipping.

Is there anyway of removing the aircon pump and leaving the system drained and unused? Would I be able to get a belt to fit the pulleys after doing this?

I reckon it would be quite expensive for a garage to fault-find and repair.

    Any suggestions most welcome.

    Cheers.

Hi If the belt is sceeching, without the air condition, swtched on,i think there is something else causing the screeching, possibly the belt tentioner

the auxillary belt (to use it's proper term) is not just an aircon belt, it drives the alternator and other ancillaries too. it's not possible to disconnect this.

if you're experiencing a screeching noise, chances are either the belt or aux tensioner need replacing, mine needs doing and is planned for the spring along with the timing belt/tensioner at the same time.

if it's reached a level whereby it is screeching constantly, i would advise getting it changed asap, as well as the aux tensioner

    Hi All,

Thanks for your replies. I'm pretty sure that it's the aircon pump that's making the noise.

What I'm after is ditching the pump (hence losing my aircon) then replacing the current belt with a smaller one.

But is there a standard belt that would fit the system after the pump has gone?

I'd have thought that with aircon being an option, there would be another belt available for when it is not installed.

But is there a whole different layout of the ancillaries if aircon IS fitted?

    Any info. much appreciated.
    Cheers.

Hi it can not be the pump because the pump does not rotate when it is switched off,but if you are determened that the noise is coming from the compressor, then it must be the magnetic coupling which is noisy have a look at the senter nut which holds the coupling to the compressor these tend to loosen.

The aircon pulley assembly is the area affected. It's a more complicated pulley than the others driven by the aux. belt.

I was just wondering if there'd be a belt available to fit the pulley system if the pump were removed.
