Help!! a4 2.4 auto wont enagage gear!!!!

hello,

1st of all i would like to say hello to everyone as i am new here.

Ok, just recently purchased a 1998 audi a4 2.4 auto tiptronic. (v6) It has aprox 81k miles on the clock and a full audi service history(not 1 year missing)

I traveled up country about 360 miles and was just about to drive back today and my car wouldnt engage to drive or anything actually. The gear stick moves fine up and down the range but will not go into park without some force.

so i can "select a gear option" wether it be reverse or 2-4 or drive. but nothing happens. The gear indicator on the dash still changes depending on what gear is selected.

before this is havnt felt anything wrong with the car, apart from when traveling at aprox 30-40 the revs tend to fluctuate between 1.5k and 2k, i think it is changing between gears but unsure.
the stick is usually smooth through the range being able to select all gears apart from 2!!! (now can select 2 but park only at a push), sometimes it got very stiff to move between selections particualy after a perioud of driving (time varies)

alot to swollow i know.... but if anyone can help i would really appreiciate it.

oh yeah, had a mechanic come and pick it up and his 1st thoughts are internal gearbox selector something or another
