May be a simple fault with the ignition system - e.g. faulty HT lead, spark plug or dist cap??? I would check these first as it may cost a lot to have the fuel injection system checked over - which is what I would do next!

Its been in the garage again 3 days after I posted sayin it was fixed ! They then said it was the throttle body so they ordered the part, changed it and it is still doin it. I'm about to give up as the garage has admitted they don't have a clue whats wrong with it

Ive got similar problem with Golf Mk3 1.6 Petrol. Does your polo stall sometimes when you are approaching roundabouts and you press clutch in. Do you find its more of a problem after the car has warmed up? and in low gears.

I had diagnostic check done by VW specialist and they picked up that the Hall Sensor on the distributor was faulty. I replaced distributor but made no difference whatsover. I have also replaced all HT leads, spark plugs and filter again no difference. Also used fuel additive which cleans fuel system but no difference again. These are all fairly cheap do do and worth a try. Reading other threads one of the most common fixes for this problem seems to be to clean the throttle body but as youve replaced it it obviously cant be that.

Somebody at work mentioned that it could be air leak downstream of the throttle body such as leaky inlet manifold gasket or gasket under throttle body.

If you get any where let us know how you sorted out.

luckily enough mine is still under warranty so this hasn't cost me anything except my time & energy. I acutally got it back last week & its been fine so far (fingers x'd). They said it was something to do with the wiring near a sensor which one though I couldn't say.

from what you have said thats exactly what mine was doing at the time but after changing the cat and a few other things it was starting to do it when pressing the accelerator so I took it straight back. Re the temp thing though it was really intermittent and at one point it even did it after I put petrol in it. Actually thought I had put diesel in it lol

Anyway good luck with yours and let me know how u get on

Hi to all, first i think anyone who owns a Vag car should invest in a OBD2 diagnostic interface and download Vag-com from the internet...it would pay from the first visit you should pay the dealer...Usually after a malfunction you should be able to scan the car for faults/trouble codes. Vag-com gives a educated guess/answer as to where the fault lies. Usually with a bit a know how and help from fellow members you could save yourself a lot of money...! Since 1980 when MB and VW introduced electronic sensors nearly all german cars became more unreliable! Petrol cars suffer from :Lambda(oxigen)sensors, faulty HT leads, dirty filters, MAF meters and throttle bodies, diesels from: dirty injectors, MAF meters, air/fuel filters, injection pumps, faulty relays and so on...Do not rely in dealers or independent garages to fix your car... because i have seen clueless audi techs and many back yard mechanics trowing new parts at a car in an atempt to fix a car. Get a good workshop manual and a good set of spaners and give it a go ! You will love getting to know your car plus it will save you a big wad of cash in labour costs.

Adams24, Clare thanks , Sounds like the interface a good idea, is this something you can plug between a laptop and the diagnostic port in car. Where can you get them from?

From Ebay, you should pick one for about 50-70 pounds and should work ok with cars up to 2001-2003. If you really want the best try www.rosstech.com for their hex can usb interface that worksd with all curent vag cars and cost about 300 dollars but you get full support and future upgrades. It pays for it as you could do a lot to your car like activate cruise control, key matching , imobiliser and ECU matching, disabling the EGR , calibrating the throttle body on petrol cars, tdi timing...check the web.
