My 80 is suffering from quick flashing indicators on the drivers side. All bulbs are working, so it's not that. I had heard somewhere that it could well be the connections at the tow hitch, so I've disconneccted them all, but still no joy. The passenger side, however, has a bullb not working in the side repeater, but they flash normally, any ideas??

Quick flashing should mean a blown bulb, so if the relay says 4x21+2x5 that means it is suitable for normal indicators and side repeaters so I imagine you must have a tow relay but that isn't normally required. I would check to see what relay you have first.

On the relay plate under the dash, VW part number 1H0 953 222 with 21 or 191 on top for a 4x21w relay.

The reason why the passenger side repeater isn't working is that a wire has come adrift. Someone said to me that the repeaters are linked and the fact that the passenger side repeater isn't working, could be the cause of the drivers side indicators flashing too fast!!!!! Can't say as I've heard anything like that before, but!!!!!!

That isn't the indicator relay. 443 951 253 J changed to 8D0 951 253 which then changed to 7M0 951 253 A and it is the load reduction relay, also known as the "X" relay.

    SORTED!!!!!

I had a text from my step Son-in-Law todayto say that he had changed the rear bulb and had fitted an L.E.D. type bulb instead, this type presents no load to the relay, thus the relay thinks "Hmm, a bulb is not working, I'll go onto quick flash mode"!!

Many many thanks, Crasher for your help. It's been a learning curve!
