Number 1 candidate is the alternator drive belt. It may be worn or loose or the tensioner may be knackered.

Mines doing the same, every time i start the car. I have recently had the alternator drive belt and the tensioner renewed so what else could be causing it?

Starter motor, very common on the starter for the 1.8T with the five speed 02J box. My Octavia VRS does it and I just ignore it.

Mine (1.8T AUM) is doing the same and I've had the auxilary belt (altenator belt?) replaced by VW as well. It does only do it when I switch on the air con/climate control when the engine is cold. I started a thread on here before and it was suggested that the air con compressor was on it's was out but having spoken to an air con chappy he suggested that this was not necessarily the case but to live with it. Replacement quote from VW was about £800.

Don't know if this is coincidence but also when starting from cold sometimes a noise similar to the exhaust blowing emits from the same area but stops when the choke cuts out....

Sorry I can't help but will be watching this thread.

    Cheers

    Andy

yeah, dont trip. mine does it too! sorta sounds like the belt slips or something for a second on the initial start up.
