How Loud is Your Central Locking?!

Just wondering if anyone else has particularly loud central locking? My 1997 Passat TDi has always had this, it is perfectly operational (one rear door is a little temperamental now and again and doesn't always lock), it sounds quite agressive to be honest, two fairly loud knocks from all doors once the button is pressed. Its definately the loudest central locking I know of, and I've compared it with a few cars. If you were to lock the car from the inside with you and the passengers inside, it would certainly make you jump!

Any thoughts.....?

Mine sounds like a bolt gun going off. They also auto lock at 15kph so quite often people ask what the noise was (just after they climb down off the headliner)

The wife's car (Ibiza) is almost silent.

I think the mechanisms were redsigned on the later B5.5 models. I suppose it may be possible to fit one of these, but at what cost.

Yeah thats a good way of describing it! I wonder how different the mechanisms are between the b5 and b5.5, I'll have to hunt down a b5.5 owner and have a listen for theirs! I'm not a central locking anorak I swear, you just realise these things when hopping from car to car!

Mine's loud too but at least I can hear it locking! There are 2 knocks as its locking the car then deadlocking it. If you press the lock button twice it will deactivate the dead locks and the alarm.
