Get the 2.0 TDI S-Line. Just as powerful seen as diesels have lots of low-end torque. Nothing to worry about with A6 diesels really, just make sure it has FSH (Preferably Audi) and if you become the owner of it, just make sure you service it.

I wouldn't touch a 2.4. I've had a manual 05 2.0 TDi from new, and now have a multi 07 2.0 TDi. Have had a 2.4 a couple of times for a week or so in multitronic guise and it was unbelievably thirsty. Driving carefully I averaged about 22mpg and it felt pretty gutless too, especially pulling away...though that may be because I'm used to a diesel.

The manual was good and very economical. The multi is good though it does have a habit of overrevving whilst going really slowly which is a bit weird - to do with the Diesel Particle Filter apparently. The multi is a smoother drive but you pay for it in terms of mpg.

Personally I wouldn't touch a 2.4 petrol, because of power and economy (and, I suspect, residuals).
