    Hi Guys

just bought my first Audi, 51 A4 SE Multitronic. Very impressed so far, it has 28k on the clock and is so far the best car I have owned.

I have a query that you may be able to help with, the gearbox makes a low whirring noise at low speeds, not very intrusive but noticeable, Wakefield Audi said it is common on this model. Can anybody confirm this or should I have it checked further?

    Hope you can help.

I think you should try an oil change. I thought the audi multitronic gearbox ,unless if yours is a CVT g'box, should be wisper quiet. Its the mileage genuine and does it shift smoothly ?

I agree, it should be quieter, but Audi Wakefield said that it was commonl on this box to have some noise. I am skeptical about this but have no way of knowing hop true this is.

I will be having an oil changeas you suggest very soon though to see if that helps.

Man, one friend of mine had a old shape audi a6 automatic that burnt a clutch on its way home from Spain...had the car checked i 3 dealers across Europe, 300 euro and 3 oil changes later still no improvement ! Came back to london, been to another 2 different audi dealers( Lea Valley and Totteridge !) and the diagnostic was that there is nothing wrong with it and the car behaves as it should due to age and mileage(150k miles). Still the car wouldnt shift higher than 3rd gear and beeing really notchy in durring shifting ! Had to go to a automatic gearbox specialist who diagnosed burnt out clutch on 4th gear and also o faulty solenoid valve and fixed it at a cost of 800 pounds. Dealer asked 5000 pounds for a new gearbox, more than double the value of the car. Moral: do not trust the grease monkeys, Aka Audi techs, some dont know the difference betwen diesel and petrol ! In your case have someone scan your car for fault codes because with automatic gearboxes they should find out if the fault is mecanic, electric or hydraulic.

Ah, I had suspected as much. I will take your advice andfind an independent specialist and get it checked over by them.

By the way, I have tried to find a Haynes manual for this model and there isn't one. Is there any other I could use?

Once again, many thanks for the advice

You could buy ELSA Win from ebay and its the program audi/vw dealers use on theyr computers. It is verry comprehensive and details all the modells from 1980 to 2007. You could get it for 10-15 pounds. Another good source is Bentley Publishers, they do all the oficial workshop manuals for audi/vw models in USA but try to get the paper manual because the cd version its not too easy to use.
