I know there's a topic running but I didn't want to end up hijacking it. I've had a misfire similar to the other poster which was classified as a possible vacuum breather tube problem but, upon inspection, the local VW dealer tells me it's burned out valves.

Interestingly I've been told they're going to VW to request that VW part-fund the repairs which leads me to think that this is a design flaw with the Polo I've got (1.2E 03 model).

Firstly, does this sound reasonable in terms of what might have gone wrong (the other thread seems to concur). Secondly I guess I'm wondering if this is common and if so, what can I do about it reoccuring or, for that matter, do I have any recourse to get money from VW if they refuse to help out on the repair?

    Thanks in advance

Flaw! The small engines (1.0>1.6, especially the 16v’s but not the 1.6 8v) are dropping like flies, it is ridiculous! In a lot of cases it is due to people running 95RON fuel instead of the stipulated 98RON but that doesn’t apply to the 1.2.

Strangely that's both reassuring and not reassuring but thanks. Any tips on how to handle the VW dealer? Given I was only in there a week ago and they didn't mention a problem they apparently noticed then I'm already planning to give them a hard time over this (if VW don't pony up the readies).

How to handle a dealer! Be polite but firm, if you wind them up they will just walk away. If VW UK contributes towards repairs on a near four and a half year old car, I will be extremely surprised. Remember though, if they do refuse it is not the dealers fault so take it up with VW UK if you wish to take it further. Has the car been serviced at a VW dealer EVRY time ON time since new? What is the date of first registration? PM me your reg or chassis number and your email address if you want info to go armed with.

Just been speaking to VW and they're going to look into the case. Dropped you a PM but I'm pretty sure it's been serviced either as required or more frequently and any other repairs have always been with VW.
