New to the forum. Need some help, please. I have a 98 Passat 1.8l and I have the following problems.
    I
    1. ABS light is on (yellow)
    2. Brake light is blinking (red)
    3. Cruise control is switch on working

It has 131k on it. There seems to be no problem with my brake. But it did not pass the state safety inspection because of the brake light.

Any and all help are welcome.

Thanks in an advance to all.

    Edwin

Spooky, I was just about to post a similair note describing the same problem for my 1.8T (2000 model)

Did a google beforehand, saw this on another site
    http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic266545.htm
(this may be bad form posting this link to a "competitor forum", apols if so)

Thread seems to suggest that replacing the ABS module (Bosch 5.3) is the way to go if you want to continue to have ABS -hopefully others here will have other ideas ...

    radiaa,

Thanks. I also found a site that repair abs module, www.modulemaster.com. Before I join this forum I did a search and found that most if not all of the problems were with the abs module and not the abs system or brake system. I believe there is a site Florida but I'm not able to find it.

    Again thanks for your help.

    Edwin

    Edwin - Np.

Would be interested if anyone on the forum has any experience of using modulemaster (or anyone else for that matter - would prefer to use a UK based outfit as I hope this would be cheaper/easier to deal with) and what the process is of removing / reinstalling the ABS module.

I assume that whilst it is not installed all that it means is that ABS wont work, but have made such assumptions before .....

    Radiaa,

There is one in UK I believe the guy said it was in Nottingham. I will try to find it for you.

There's a place called ECU Testing that reconditions/exchanges them.

    http://www.ecutesting.com/

I have the same problem - ABS light is on and red warning light flashing. Was intermittent at first, then on permanently. VW dealer told me the ECU was faulty and wanted over a grand for a new one. So I ordered one from the above company. Simple to fit - just 6 screws to undo, although you need to remove the screen washer bottle to get access.

However, after fitting it the warning lights are still on. So I'm not sure what to try next.

    Hi All,

I had the same problem with my 2000 Passat V5. Used http://www.ecutesting.com/ which successfully repaired the Bosch 5.5 control unit for around £130 all inclusive. They normally turn around the unit in a few days. Before repair they test to see if it is faulty, if not they return it with a test fee of about £25. Once repaired the unit should reset all the VW fault codes to clear the dash, it did with mine, so not sure what the problem is for KeithS.. Apparently this is a generic problem with the electronic components in the control unit, usually fail after about 100,000 miles. Even new replacements can suffer, apparently ecutesting upgrade the components upon repair.. Hope that helps..

    1st things 1st and a cheap one.

Brake Light Switch, about £8 from a dealer.

I lost my cruise control and brake lights and this was at fault. Cleaning it helped, but replacing it solved the problem.

This guide will help for cleaning your exsisting one:
