please please please help me...... my girlfriend 1999 bora (1600cc) has been having the ABS light come up on the dash for a while now and the ABS comes in on very soft braking. It is not constant and only happens whenever it feels like it. It has been to a local garage and VAG, they both have said its the F/R/H wheel sensor.............. it has now been changed twice and its still the same.
they have checked the air gap, and found it to be all ok.

Is there anything else i can do/check/clean?

please help me as she is now using my car!!!

    Welcome to VWAF

You've had the wheel sensor changed twice and the fault remains?

I don't want to be too obvious, but have you had the fault codes cleared after each sensor change?

Do you have the results of their code scans that you can share?

If there is no fault code the wheel speed data for each wheel needs to be studied on diagnostic equipment such as VAG-COM at very low speed to see which sensor is dropping out. This is a common problem, especially after a wheel bearing has been changed. It is sometimes necessary to file down the brass mounting point of the sensor to get the gap down to the required 0.3-mm.

    Hi Crasher

I have this same problem. I changed my rear wheel bearings last week, and now I am getting abs and brake light illuminated on dash. I have done VAG diagnostics and its coming up with speed sensor on rear passenger side. Is it worth replacing the speed sensor? or like you said to file down the brass mounting point? Is this the moiunting point of the sensor? If so do you have any pics? Is this easy to do DIY?

    Any step by step instructions?

    please help!!!

I thought (dangerous I know) that this was a fairly common problem across the range?

I had an air gap issue after pummelling the heck out of the flippin' pinchbolts when I changed my suspension.

I had to remove and reseat the sensors to get the light to go off.
