EPS (power steering) yellow warning light

Hi all,

I have an Audi A4 B8 which has a yellow EPS warning light along with a "Steering system fault. You can continue driving" message, which appeared 9 months ago immediately after hitting a pothole. There's no loss of power steering fluid or any loss of function to the power steering (please see photo attached).

I asked a local garage to perform a diagnostics read and to clear the faults to see if they re-appeared. The fault that remained was U1409-00 (control unit - internal temperature) which they believed was linked to the warning light. They also suggested that this was most likely due to water ingress on the PAS control unit however I have some doubts. I don't think the warning light would appear as a result of water ingress of the control unit as the warning light appeared immediately after hitting a pothole, I would suspect it's more likely a sensor? I think water ingress on the control unit is a common fault but not leading to the warning light on my car.

I'm looking to get a second opinion on this as I've been quoted £3k to replace the steering rack (with control unit) which would be the cost of the car... At the moment the vehicle would fail MOT.
