Remind me tomorrow so I can look at the wiring diagram. Did you take a positive feed direct to the starter solenoid 50 connection with the red/black cable disconnected? It being manual, have you tried bump starting it?

There are two starter relays (because of the stop/start), both part number 4H0 951 253 C and both on the relay board at side by side at positions 6.1 and 6.2 with the group number 646 printed on top, there are two other 646’s at positions 3 and 10 so you could try swapping them around.

OP said in his first post that the engine turned over many times without starting before the motor wouldn't turn it any more.

I know, but I have had cars with a bad engine earth that will crank over but not fire although they will bump start instantly.

Hi crasher thanks for the reply and the solenoid details.

I couldn't get the plug off yesterday to put a feed directly onto the starter solenoid. On the deck that is what extended the pinion from the starter. The main positive feed is what caused it to rotate.

I tried bump starting it down a slight incline on the 1st evening a couple of times but it didn't fire. Unfortunately I was pushing so didn't get to feel exactly what happened. I am a bit wary about tow bump starting it at the moment as I am not sure about the state of the engine (in case it has somehow slipped the chain or there is another cause of engine siezure).

I also tried using the jump lead to create an alternative negative/ground to the block but this didn't change anything.

My plan is to try the solenoid swap and I also going to take some electrical cable to enable me to simulate the signal feed to the solenoid. Before I try and tow/bump start the car i am going to take spark plugs out and see if I can manually rotate the engine. It feels like it is a large star drive but not sure what size it will need yet. I am loathe to try bumping it until I am certain that the engine will turn.

Thanks for your input it is much appreciated.....I cannot even begin to imagine how you would explain a situation like this to a customer!!

For the crank centre bolt I have seen three sizes, 18mm, 19mm and 21mm 12 point socket and I have a feeling yours is 21mm. A word of warning, make no attempt the rotate the engine anticlockwise as it is highly likely to jump a tooth.
