    Unlikely but some ac compressors can sound really bad. Worth eliminating at this stage of the project

    Yeah, I put a stethoscope on the compressor and that's not the source of the knock. It's running smooth.

    Using the steth, it's loudest from the backside of the block. The valve train had a nice smooth rhythm to it too. I think this motor is DOA

    Could be gudgeon pin failure, it does happen, but it sounds too sharp, almost external.
