Yeah, I put a stethoscope on the compressor and that's not the source of the knock. It's running smooth.

Using the steth, it's loudest from the backside of the block. The valve train had a nice smooth rhythm to it too. I think this motor is DOA

It is why we refuse to do it. I broke my own rule on this over gearbox's as I wanted to do a six speed conversion, ended up pulling the "guaranteed" used box from Charles Trent and spent £2k in parts alone rebuilding it as it was FUBAR.

That isn't rod knock or cam failure, I don't recognise the noise.

Hmmm... Weird. It's loudest from the backside of the block (around cylinder 1) and the valve train is sounding smooth. I probed with a stethoscope.

I'll recheck timing again to see

Could it be piston slap?

Could be gudgeon pin failure, it does happen, but it sounds too sharp, almost external.
