At just a gnats short of 240k miles, my owned-from-new 06 2.0 TDi B6 Passat has let me down for the first time ever today! I'd driven about 50 miles with 3 stops and came to restart the car and it wouldn't. Engine would turn over, occasionally almost catch but be very lumpy, but not start properly. After leaving it for half an hour, I was able to get it to start and it then ran normally (albeit with the ESP and Tyre pressure lights lit and not cancellable - and Auto Hold not working). If I stopped the car - it wouldn't restart unless I left it to cool for 10 mins or so. I gave up waiting for the recovery truck and decided to drive it home - and all was perfectly well because I didn't stop - though once I got home the same behaviour remained.

I've searched archives for this - a few reports of disparate theories - but nothing conclusive. Poor battery was suggested - but I cranked the hell out of it this afternoon and it seemed perfectly happy.

Any easy ideas for the garage to check. Not worth doing much to the car as the tin-worm has had more than its fill on the bodywork - but it's an inconvenient time to go and spend time looking for a replacement!

    Thanks

My initial thoughts are weak battery or crankshaft speed sender.
