I do only around 3k miles a year, but still do annual oil&filter changes.

It's a pain having to jack the front up, remove under-tray, drop oil, re-fit under-tray.

Was looking at extracting oil from the top using an electric pump. I realise that top extraction usually doesn't remove quite as much as dropping the oil, but as I'm oil changing every 3k miles, I'm thinking sludge won't really be an issue.

Is it possible to top-extract with this engine? Tube down the dip-stick?

If you have done it, are you managing to get almost all the oil out?

What I'm getting at is, will a pipe get to the bottom of the sump?

What's your engine code, I have a CAGB engine and have never had any success with an oil extractor.

I have a hand pump and Pneumatic type of oil extractor, never managed to get most of the oil out of the sump probably due to the size of the balance oil pump fitted to these engines.

I have used a Pela oil extractor for many years on both my 2003 VW Golf Mk4 1.9 TDI and 2006 A3 2.0 TDI. It probably won't get every drop out, but like you, I do frequent oil changes. The Golf has recently been scrapped as it had a rear axle rust issue that proved too costly to repair, but the point being that at 379,000 miles, it wasn't the engine that gave up.

This is the type I use: https://pelaproducts.eu/pela-6000/
