Timing Chain replacement P0016 Code - Advice

Afternoon all,

Been a while, hope youre all well! I don't have the Mk3 anymore but I've had a mk6 (CAXA) for a while. I'm after a bit of advice as I'm not as familiar with these by a long stretch.

Been nursing this car through life and its just hit 72 k miles and was getting pretty rattly on startup. Opted for a chain kit and waterpump replacement because I suspected some chain stretch and worn tensioner as it wasnt holding tension overnight. It was taking longer to settle down after startup. Booked it into the garage, they had the wrong kit arrive so it was in the shop for an extra day. Got delayed again as they wanted to replace the crank sensor for a genuine part (I was told), I was confused as to why they might need this but they said it wouldn't cost me, so fair play.

Got the car this morning, no codes. Took it for a much needed run to the shop to buy food, on the way back it tripped the check engine light on the dash.

Scanned the car P0016 fault. Crank Cam position correlation error. I'm guessing this happened the first time when they opted for the sensor. Sensor came in, and i'm assuming they cleared the fault and drove it over to me assuming it would resolve itself. So I didn't see it at the time of them handing the car over.

Had no issues with this fault previous to chain/pump change, so assuming sensors weren't bad at the time - am I right to think that the timing is off by a tooth or so when they have installed it? They have opted to pick the car up Tuesday to take it back in - sucks but it is what it is. They seem like a nice bunch, i'm just assuming its one of those things that gotten missed. I'm just after getting my car back on the road as its sorely missed for daily life right now.

Long story short - Unsure of the chances that it is a genuinely faulty sensor on either crank or cam. In my mind it it needs re-timing since no correlation faults happened on the way in to the garage, so assuming its slightly off timing, am I wrong or what are the chances its a genuine sensor fault? Any thing they need to look out for? I'm guessing they dont deal with VAG cars daily for this sort of thing.

I left the firing order of the faults in. I wish I had a scope to pull the timing off, but had to use my handheld scanner for now.
