2019 2l diesel B8 Passat, temperature gauge has always sat at 90. About a month ago it moved up to 120 then after a few seconds back to90, it’s done this randomly about 5 or 6 times, in the first halfhour of driving when sitting on a motorway at about 60 mph. I’ve done over 2000 miles since it first did it,then today it went to 130 and I got warning message to stop the car,I stopped turned off the ignition then turned it back on, the tempwent back quickly to 90, and sat there, I drove about 100 miles no problems. No eml no loss of power. Airfilter and fuel have 10000 miles on them. Any ideas, pretty sure theengine isn’t overheating, if it was it’d surely take longer tocool down and the gauges sits at 90 after moving, sticking thermostator water pump but wouldn’t there be an eml or code?

Classic EA288 engine water pump variable displacement ring failure, keep doing this and the engine WILL fail. Often the EGR cooler gets damaged and starts throwing aluminium dust into the engine which destroys the bores, damages the turbo and causes the DPF to crack. Modern VAG temp gauges are stupid, they read 90 at a real 77 and still read 90 at 117 then soot up, it hit 130…

Yes, we are just doing one now on a 2018 Golf 7 GTD, 58000 miles, genuine pump and cambelt kit. The front oil seal is also leaking so that's sump off and the heater matrix is blocked.
