Yet another question. When taking off in first gear, there's always been a slight wobble in the front...fine in the higher gears. I have now noticed a strange clattering/ knock when under load, still in first gear, say when taking off up a hill. All the front suspension, strut mounts, lower arms, ball joints, track rod ends and anti roll bar links have been replaced. And the aux belt tensioner.Where else to start looking please! Sound like something is going to go soon Appreciated as always.

Likely to be wear in the right hand drive shaft stub shaft or flange shaft assembly but all the parts are obsolete as of last year and none of it is available aftermarket so used gamble only. My friend has the exact same vehicle (partly silver, mostly rust) and it needed a new front spring; obsolete genuine and nothing available aftermarket so he had to find used from Germany.

Thanks Steve, yet again. Any chance you could give me a part number for the stub axle...I can get an outer driveshaft no problem, but as you say, nothing for the short one. Tried etka, but no joy. Appreciated

It has the GPE code box, the stub shaft is 09A 409 356 A and £314.40 and looks to be still available plus there are aftermarket repair kits such as the GSP 203383

So I have removed both the inner and the outer driveshafts. Tbh the outer one seems fine...it was replaced last year. Splines seem good going into gearbox, all I can see is a fair bit of play on the bearing that supports inner shaft, and sounds a bit rough...would this be enough to cause the symptoms?! Looks like I can replace the bearing...
