Fortunately the misfire appears to be fixed but we’ve no idea why we had to do what we did.

Lucifer (the Devil car, a 2000 AllRoad) started to misfire on cylinder 1. Renewing the coil pack and plug made no difference - there was no spark. Swapping the connections to the ignition amplifiers got us a spark and moved the misfire. Great, replace the faulty amplifier (for the odd-numbered cylinders) and job done.

In fact, the replacement made no difference; still misfiring on cylinder 1 and swapping the amplifier connections moved the misfire to cylinder 4. I had bought two amplifiers since if one had failed, the other probably wouldn’t be far behind. For no very good reason, we fitted the second one (for the even numbered cylinders) and huzzah! No misfire anywhere.

What neither I nor my mechanic can figure out is why changing the even amplifier fixed a misfire on an odd cylinder. Can anyone shed any light on this? It’s doing our heads in.

The worrying thing is that if I hadn’t bought two new amplifiers, we’d still have a misfire. We’d have never thought of buying another since there was no problem with the even numbered cylinders. The car would probably have ended up being scrapped

When I fix something and I don’t know how, I have given up asking why and just move onto the next job.
