1.9PD ASZ Engine starting issues.

I am at the end of my tether with this car.

It has been erratic with starting for some months now, but always seems better when the weather is colder.

a few days ago it was a very warm day, and it just refused to start, and then the glow plug light stayed on. I read the codes with VCDS, ( which i have done numerous times before) and got 00667 Ambient temperature signal intermittent. This was a new one, hadn't had that before. The next morning I went to it very early so that there was a definite cold start. The engine barely turned over and it was running! Later that morning once the weather had warmed up it would start, but took a bit of effort.

This morning again fairly warm day, didn’t want to know. Glow plug light came on again, and i got code 16706 G28 Engine speed sensor no signal. It had this one back in March and a new sensor was fitted. I went to the multi plug for the sensor and gave the wires there a wiggle, and got hold of the loom nearby and gave it all a shake. The engine then started after a bit of turning over.

Now this to me suggests a wiring fault. The question is. Is there any known places in the harness where the wires break? Or have i now got to strip it all out in the hope of finding defective wires?

Once its running it goes like the wind, and is brilliant on fuel. Its just getting it going that is the pain!

Disconnect the injector harness, go into measuring blocks 01 and crank it over, keep cranking as VCDS will lose comms with the ECU and take a few seconds to come back, view the cranking rpm and tell us what it is.

I just tried this. I assume you meant engine 01 then measuring blocks?

I misread your reply and disconnected the glow plug harness. it cranked for around two seconds then burst into life. I never got a reading for cranking rpm.

its a fairly warm day again here 16.5°. The only thing i have changed since my original post when it wouldnt start was to charge the battery up for a couple of hours. I dont think its a dud battery though, as it will always crank over fine, the battery was new 3 yrs ago, which equates to 12000 miles.
