A7 2013 intermittent rough idle and smell and smoke

Hello All!

Quick question for anyone with experience in this matter. Few months ago started noticing that every now and again the car will go in to a rough idle and get an oscillating note from the engine with revs bouncing up and down. Along with it usually is a strong smell in the cabin which i can't say is burning diesel nor burning oil. The exhaust starts kicking out white smoke too. Plugged in and no engine codes at all. No EML either!!! It doesnt really affect the cars performance as a whole to be honest. I thought it was a DPF regen happening more often than usual so i got the cat removed and chemically cleaned and blasted. Still the issue remains. I serviced the car and before doing so i used an engine flush and this sprung an oil leak which i had a mechanic look in to and they diagnosed a small oil leak from the injector seals and rocker cover.

Is the injector seal issue part of the intermittent rough idle issue?

Are they seperate problems?

The car is on 147k miles with decent service history but it is usually used on small short journeys with the occasional long blast.

Any opinion from anyone experienced with this will be most useful!

Injector blow by and even failure is a common problem with these and you have the common symptoms, there is a new revised version, part number 059 130 277 EH and £760.80… each! I can’t look up if they are available aftermarket until Monday.

VAG knew full well this was going to be an issue so they designed a vent system to spray out goo when they were going as otherwise they just go bang and take out the entire fuel rail as they go but they do it anyway. Check for signs of gunk on the exhaust, this is VAG’s own picture.

Thanks for the info! Would you say there's symptoms there of injector failure or just blow-by? The rough idle is very intermittent.

The white smoke at idle is the key symptom and even the subject of a VW TPI and to get one of those, it has to be really bad!

I will be surprised if just the seals works, we had a Toerag in this week with the same problem, it needs at least one injector.

Yep you were bang on. I've been told the number 1 injector had an electrical fault but all others were fine. Reseated and sealed all other injectors and new one fitted. Picking it up later so hopefully no more issues!
