My daughter's car has an intermittent air leak and so far I've not been able to find it.
However today I made some areas wet and air bubbles were forming where this metal pipe attached to the engine. Could this cause the limp issue? It tends to go into limp mode when put in 5th gear too soon and the engine labours. Hopefully the photo will upload onto my post!

A code read is a must. The leak you found, that's the egr to inlet manifold pipe, may be the cause but without a code it's hard to say, at a guess I'd say it's unlikely to be that although it should still be leak proof.

Thanks for getting back to me. Codes as follows, P0101 passive/sporadic Mass or Volume Air flow sensor "A" circuit range/performance. And P2279 passive/sporadic Intake Air system leak. I hope this helps. There are generator codes but I guess these aren't linked. Cheers and Tia.

A leak in that pipe will allow unmetered air into the manifold.

Excellent, I've got a gasket on order and will see if that resolves the issue. Cheers.

The EGR gasket arrived, when I went to fit it there was a crude EGR delete plate fitted. I guess that explains the air leak. I cleared the codes but still get P0101 after the glow plug light starts flashing part way through the test drive. It doesn't appear to go into limp mode though which it used to before. Any ideas on the P0101 code? Many thanks.

16485 (P0101) - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Implausible Signal

It could be the AMM is faulty but it isn’t common on the CAYC and for you not to have had an EGR low flow code I expect it has been remapped so a reflash of the ECU with the pre recall software would be the first step. Also make sure the stupid “Flow straightener3C0 129 363 isn’t still inside the AMM.

Not had this on my cayc yet but I saw a BMW 116d last week with the same code description (maf implausible signal). It had a broken plastic pcv pipe, changed pipe code not come back yet. On the golf there is an oring at the turbo boost side which hardens over time. If disturbed it can break. A little seepage in that area is normal but if you find excessive oil that could be it. Unfortunately best view is from underneath.

Cheers, is the AMM the MAF sensor? I did wonder about changing the MAF sensor as it is an inexpensive part. So, if the flow straightener pipe is in there should I remove it? I too wondered why the EGR didn't throw a fault code up, I've got an appointment at a diagnostic specialist in Colchester early October, but if I can go some way to fixing the issue (give the MAF a go) then it'll save my daughter some cash. P2279 did come back so the EGR gasket wasn't a permanent fix.
